Hello, future friends! Or at least I hope we will become friends at some point. If not, that’s cool too. You can call me Miki, new (nervous) blogger for Graphic Lab Tees. I’m also a huge book fangirl, wannabe arts & crafts “instructor”, serial online shopper, avid collector of things no one else cares about (I’m a self-diagnosed hoarder & am working on this!) as well as one who hopes to one day be allowed to have a cat or two (or more). I already have a list of names for these future pets; just let me have one!
Let’s see… friends share secrets right? So, I guess I’ll go first. I grew up in Hawaii and my first job was working at Wet’n’Wild Hawaii (it’s a water park, I swear! It was originally Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park) with my mom and younger sister but I can’t swim. What I do in the water wouldn’t even count as “doggy paddling”. I don’t think I’d necessarily drown if it came down to it though. I’d like to think that people who grow up in Hawaii are unsinkable and that it is highly unlikely for them to drown. I think the water on the island is infused with mermaid tears and/or we are born with invisible gills. Perhaps this is just wishful thinking on my part.
I digress. I moved to the mainland for college and I’ve been here ever since. In college, I majored in Human Development and minored in Japanese Studies. My current job has nothing to do with either of these (sorry mom!). Maybe one day this will change, but for now I love my job and the people I work with. Seriously a lot of days don’t even feel like work, err.. I mean we do work and boy do we work hard! >:) If I’m being honest, I really wanted to major in Arts & Crafts (this unfortunately was not a possible major where I went to school)! If you ever need assistance with a project, I’m your girl! I’m not very artistic strictly speaking, which is one of the few reasons why I admire so many different artists. You will most likely be seeing a few tutorials for some of my personal projects, like my felt plushies! I’ve made Daleks, Totoros and Agent P from Disney’s Phineas & Ferb. I may not know how to use a sewing machine properly but I can hand stitch felt like nobody’s business!
What else…? I was obsessed with reading while I was growing up (isn’t this usually the case for those who are looking for an escape?) but I went through a bit of a reading hiatus during my college years. Especially with the required reading. Sometimes I think long and hard about this and wonder how I ever passed any of my classes. After graduating, my love for reading was reinstated during my glorious nine month “fun-employment” phase. I love fangirling over the fictional characters in my beloved books which are usually of the YA, fantasy, dystopian and sci-fi genres.
There’s a ton of things I’m super excited about and can’t wait to start discussing like season 4 of Teen Wolf (!!!!!), season 2 of Gravity Falls (premiering on August 1st!), speculations for season 4 of BBC’s Sherlock and season 3 of Orphan Black, some of my all-time favorite Japanese dramas, the $6.00 movies my friend and I go see on the weekends before noon, the half marathon I’m currently training for with Nerdles and home sweet home, Hawaii (to name a few). I’m also slowly working my way through the Welcome to Night Vale podcast series- anyone else a fan?! I’m totally on Team Hover Cat (I’ve yet to learn the actual name of this cat but I like calling it this because… “hovercraft”). Anyways, like I said there are way too many things that I’m currently excited for..
Like most people, most of my daily decisions are based on how comfortable or uncomfortable something will make me. I’ve been learning though that even sticking a single toe out of my personal bubble can sometimes yield positive results (I’m sure this comes as a huge surprise to you all). Writing this blog is definitely a giant leap out of my comfortable space, but I’m grateful for the opportunity.
Alright, enough’s enough! I think I’ve told you more than you ever wanted to know. Your turn! Tell me about something you love, something weird going on in your life or why you even decided to read any of this nonsense in the first place. I can’t wait to get to know you all. 😉 And, I’d love to hear about your experiences at Comic Con!!! What was the best panel and/or cosplay that you saw?! Were you able to stop by the Graphic Lab booth?! I sure hope so! 😀
